Developer quick to update ringtone utility for iTunes 8

Opinion and Analysis

The trouble with software add-ons is that they often break when new versions of the underlying application appear. But Ambrosia was quick to respond when changes in Apple's iTunes 8 stopped its iToner ringtone utility from working.

Unlike many mobile phones, the iPhone makes it relatively difficult to instal custom ringtones. You can't simply transfer an arbitrary sound file onto the handset and set that as the ringtone.

While iTunes allows users to create ringtones from selected tracks purchased from the iTunes Store - and pay extra for the privilege - that's not enough for many users.

And that's where utilities such as Ambrosia's iToner come in. All you need to do is drop audio files (MP3, AAC, WAVE and AIFF are all supported) into the iToner window, and then tell it to sync.

Apple released iTunes 8 on September 9, and on the same day Ambrosia updated iToner to version 1.0.9 to provide compatibility with the new music software.

Other changes include a simple way of removing all ringtones, improved support for various firmware versions, and minor bug fixes.

If you don't want to pay $US15 for iToner, Apple explains how to create iPhone ringtones with GarageBand here.
