Opinion and Analysis

While an unauthorised voice recording app was quick to arrive for jailbroken iPhones, the market has taken off with Apple-sanctioned third party programs sold through the App Store.

The latest application for this purpose is Plum Record 1.0.1 - just $US4.99/$A5.99 from the App Store. And it's more than a simple voice notes application.

Attractive features include an iPod-style wheel for controlling the recorder, plus provision for tagging recordings with text or photos either during or after recording, and for organising recordings into pseudo-folders.

Recordings can be transferred to a Mac running 10.5 with the Plum Record Server. The files can only be transferred via Wi-Fi, but developer Plum Amazing blames this on restrictions imposed by Apple.

Weird - Apple doesn't support data transfer via Wi-Fi for its own apps, preferring to use USB. Yet it's the opposite for third-party developers. Go figure!

Anyway, Plum Record Server will soon be available also for Mac OS X 10.4, Windows and Linux.

Sound is recorded at 8, 22 or 44 kHz, and once moved over to the Server software can be converted to MP3, MP4, AAC and other common audio formats.

Tell fellow iPhone users which recording app is the best on page three.
