Apple's Mac sales set Jobsian "BOOM!"-style record

Opinion and Analysis

Until Apple TV includes a tuner, you need a USB tuner connected to a Mac, with Elgato's EyeTV or equinux' The Tube software to record broadcasts and then export them to iTunes for viewing via an Apple TV. Not the most convenient arrangement, and the transcoding involved most likely results in some loss of quality. How much did you pay for that HD TV? So why accept an inferior picture?

I'm not saying Apple will turn the Apple TV into a full-blown PVR, only that they should.

And it would be remarkable if the MacBook and iMac families aren't refreshed by the end of the year. I can imagine the iMac design lasting through at least one more speed bump, but a new MacBook with an aluminium shell (possibly picking up styling cues from the MacBook Air) sounds plausible.

I'd also expect at least one iPod announcement, with improved capacity and/or price reductions to reflect continuing progress in mobile storage. Maybe it's just me, but the shuffle and nano are both looking a bit dated and due for facelifts.
