Much of the discussion surrounding Mac security surrounds malware - how prevalent it is on the platform, and how resistant the operating system is to its introduction. But physical theft or loss may be a bigger risk, especially for notebooks, so Sophos is providing ten tips to help protect your data in those circumstances.

While the advice is mainly applicable to portable machines, some of the suggestions are relevant to desktop models in situations where there is a greater than normal risk of unauthorised access.

I'd encourage you to read the full paper, but the main recommendations can be summarised in the following bullet points:

Don't carry unnecessary data.

Beware of what others can see over your shoulder when working in public.

Use different passwords for your account and the login keychain.

Lock the screen when you leave the computer even for a few moments.

Use Filevault, encrypted disk images, and Keychain notes to protect sensitive files and information.

Use Secure Empty Trash to overwrite deleted files.
