Opinion and Analysis

MobileMe provides most of the existing features of .Mac, including online storage that looks like a normal volume; synchronisation of Dock items, preferences, etc between Macs; and integration with iPhoto, iMovie and iWeb.

Improvements include revamped web mail and contacts, a web calendar application that mimics iCal, and changes to web galleries to allow more control via a web browser. Apple has also doubled the amount of online storage, from 10G to 20G for a normal account.

Also new is the ability to push new or modified calendar or contact information to a Mac, PC, iPhone or iPod touch, removing the need for scheduled or manual synchronisation. Similarly, new emails are pushed to iPhones.

The downside is the removal of web access to bookmarks (which was a convenient feature when using a borrowed computer), iCards (emailed greeting cards), .Mac slides, and sync support for Mac OS X 10.3.
