Opinion and Analysis

Toast 9 Titanium, iStat Pro 4.6, and DiskWarrior 4.1 CD Updater.

Toast 9 Titanium

New features of this well-regarded disc burning suite ($US99.99) include support for Blu-ray Disc (Blu-ray video authoring is a $US19.95 optional extra), the ability to span large files across multiple discs, and editing of TiVo, EyeTV or QuickTime videos prior to burning.

Other features include the ability to compress large video files to fit on one single-layer DVD, batch conversion, video quality preview, capturing any audio playing on the Mac, disc labelling (including LightScribe and Labelflash), direct access to iLife 08 and Aperture libraries, and streaming video to iPhone, iPod touch or any Internet-connected Mac or PC.

iStat Pro 4.6

iSlayer's system monitoring widget now features improved support for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac OS X 10.5. iStat Pro 4.6 includes additional minor improvements and bug fixes.

DiskWarrior 4.1 CD Updater

DiskWarrior 4.1 was released in January to provide Mac OS X 10.5 compatibility, but existing owners have been hanging out for an update. It's finally arrived, but with the caveat that "the new startup CD will start up the same set of Macs as your current DiskWarrior CD. Your new CD will not start up any Mac that your current DiskWarrior CD can not."

The Mac Pro, Xserve, MacBook Air and MacBook and MacBook Pro models introduced this year by Apple are still unsupported by DiskWarrior.

Software Watch highlights new and updated Mac software that I think is interesting, useful or otherwise significant. It makes no recommendations - its purpose is merely to provide pointers for people who share my interests.
