Opinion and Analysis

Office 2004, Office 2008, NeoOffice, and firmware updates for the MacBook Air and ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.4.1 Update

Despite being a relatively hefty 13M download, all this update appears to deliver is a security update for a flaw that could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

Get the update here or via Microsoft AutoUpdate.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update

This honkin' great 114M download covers a multitude of bases. There's a security fix for an arbitrary code vulnerability and another to fix the incorrect ownership issue caused by the original installer (hopefully you've already sorted that out manually if you're in an environment where it could be a real issue). There are also fixes for a bunch of issues affecting performance, stability, printing, equations, citations, font substitution, certain date calculations, the use of secondary displays, networking, mail notification sounds and more.

Read the full list of changes here, and get the update here  or via Microsoft AutoUpdate.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update

This update is for Mac Pro computers with one or more ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards installed, and is said to "improve system stability." Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later and the Leopard Graphics Update are required.

MacBook Air SMC Update 1.0

Apple recommends this update to all MacBook Air owners. It fine-tunes the speed and operation of the internal fan, and may help to keep the system cooler. Note that installing this software merely puts the real installer program into the Applications/Utilities folder. You must run that installer to actually get the software onto your Air.

NeoOffice 2.2.3

NeoOffice 2.2.3 - the donationware Mac-native office suite based on OpenOffice - now includes QuickTime video playback and image import from scanners and cameras.

Software Watch highlights new and updated Mac software that I think is interesting, useful or otherwise significant. It makes no recommendations - its purpose is merely to provide pointers for people who share my interests.
