For that price, you could probably even pick up a PC together with a student edition of Microsoft Office. Or if you didn't want to shell out extra for MS Office, you could settle for Open Office.

Then again, you might consider that the family would be better served with something more portable. Once again, there are a large number of options.

There are low end but quite powerful notebook computers, complete with optical disk drives.

However, if you want something that's top of the range, you could consider getting a netbook.

The latest Asus Eee PC 1000HE is supposed to be the creme de la creme of netbooks, with 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 10 inch screen and so on. It costs AUD$895.

Whatever computer you decide to buy, it's bound to be a better use of your money than a TV. At least the kids can use it to help them with school projects.

Parents can use it to look up the latest news or read about topics of interest on the Internet. They can use it to entertain themselves on sites like YouTube or even use it to watch Internet TV.

TVs are a dime a dozen. You can pick one up in a second hand store. Do you really want to blow your money on a new idiot box when for the same money you can have a device that does so much more?
