These days $900 is not exactly a fortune but it does come in handy if you want to buy cheap technology or enough food to keep your family's bellies full. Here in Australia, many families are about to receive another Government handout of AUD$900. What can they buy that will benefit them most?

This is of course a loaded question. Everyone knows that basic needs come first. Shelter, food and clothes come way before technology.

However, if we assume that in most working families the basic needs are taken care of (a big assumption I know), So the Government wants you to spend (blow?) your cash gift, what should you buy?

If you were to believe online retailer Kogan, the best thing to blow your $900 on is a 37 inch LCD TV, cleverly named the Kevin37, after Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

However, if you want to spend your money on electronics, why not buy something that will benefit your family rather than help them to turn into lounge lizard zombies.

For a start if you have school age kids, do you think they might benefit from having at least one Internet connected computer in your house? After all, practically every school these days in Australian urban areas assumes that their students have access to a computer outside of school hours.

If you were to buy a computer, what sort could you buy for $900. Well quite a good one actually. There are any number of quite powerful white box desktop Windows PCs that you could get. What else?
