As David Thodey, Telstra group managing director for enterprise and
government, pointed out to meeting, the technology to accomplish true
holographic conferencing. ala Star Wars, exists right now. After all he
did perform a mock handshake on stage with the holographic likeness of
Dr Bradlow. However, there is one essential missing ingredient - and
it's a big one - bandwidth.
With the current state of broadband worldwide barely able to support
the Internet traffic we already have - even VoIP calls can sometimes be
patchy - the cost of tranporting Gigabytes of high definition
holographic 3-D images in real time is currently prohibitive.
Telstra assures us, however, that in say five or so years hologram to
hologram communications may be an affordable reality. In Australia's
case, as always, it will depend on who owns the pipes
