Software Freedom Day 2008: Updated

Opinion and Analysis

At 1pm, the talks move to the Education sector. Kat Clancy from Deakin University will be talking about how Deakin University has integrated a number of FOSS technologies with the Library's service offerings to better meet the needs of students, researchers and academics.

At 1.30pm, Kathy Reid, also from Deakin University will be talking about how Free and Open Source Software can help to deliver real value in this sector by providing low-cost, easy to use applications which are easily hosted either by the educational institution or from reasonably priced providers.

At 2pm, Brianna Laugher, a leading light in Australia's contributions to Wikipedia and Wikimedia will be giving a talk entitled "How Free Software makes Wikipedia possible".

The last of the scheduled talks at 3pm will be Gerry White, director of the Internet Society of Australia talking about how openness is vitally important in preventing over-regulation by government or restrictions by proprietary software companies and how this can impede people's education and progress.

Additionally "lightning talks" of just a few minutes each will highlight a particular project, application or viewpoint.

All of the information above and more can be found at the team's website: http://softwarefreedomday.org/melb

I'd like to extend the invitation to everyone in Melbourne on the 20th September 2008 to come down to The Hub, 17 Waterview Walk, Docklands and explore the wonderful world that is Free and Open Source Software!
