Opinion and Analysis

But if I wanted to do that for all folders at the same time, can I do that? The answer is a definate yes! Go to the Applications menu, click on Accessories then Disk Usage Analyser.

Disk Usage Analyser is a very powerful tool for finding out the size of files and folders and it presents it to you in a nice graph on the right-hand side of the window.

If you click on Scan Home it will scan your Home directory. If you click on Scan Filesystem it scans the entire computer and any filesystems which you may be connected to (such as remote Windows shares). If you click on Scan Folder you can scan an individual folder. You can also Scan Remote Folders, such as Windows shares, FTP servers, and so on.

When the scan has completed you can sort by name of folder, file size or number of items in the folder. You can also hover over the graph on the right-hand side and it will tell you what the files are in that section. If you click on one of the colours it will take you to the file in the left-hand side.

As I said previously, it is an extremely powerful tool for figuring out where all that drive space has gone.

Please read onto page 3 to find about another extremely useful tool.
