There ain't no fun doing "it" anymore!

Opinion and Analysis

Opinion: Computers and IT used to be fun once. Have we lost the plot? Maybe... or maybe not.

In this article's title, I actually did mean to say ain't but suppose I should have capitalized the "it" and written: "There ain't no fun doing IT anymore." ...

Too subtle for you, squire? Never mind. Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink (and Say no more).

When I was putting my web site together some years ago and planning the Useful Links section, I decided to include a page devoted to funny stuff, the humorous side of life, the weird, bizarre and just plain nutty.

See here or here for my miniscule collection of humor links and resources.

I didn't appreciate until then just how seriously humour is taken, with a massive number of web sites dedicated to it. I wonder how many man years -- and woman years -- have been devoted to adding some light-hearted spice to the Web, or viewing it. (And was it with employer approval?)

From your reactions to some of our articles in our comments system, I've detected a worrying tendency for some of you dear iTWire readers to be a tad too sober and intense about technology, be it Windows versus Linux, Apple and Google and Microsoft, free and/or open source software, and far too many other things.

I've touched upon this alarming trend in earlier articles, such as For gorsake, stop laughing, this is Linux!

What follows today is another dose or two of Dr. Tony's patented remedy for curing uber-geek melancholia.

Since we were just talking about Apple and Google, here's Geek Culture's take on Google's Android verus Apple's iPhone. Who's the winner?

Then, when everything goes wrong with your desktop system, or your development project, you'll find out that one of the many Murphy's Laws predicted the disaster well in advance. See here or here for a list of links, which, in strict accordance with these very same laws, will undoubtedly turn out to be broken -- but don't try blaming me, Murphy's in control, as always.

Hey, look out, the boss is coming! You'd better install and run the Fake Progress Bar and tell him that you're only reading this iTWire article until your job finishes processing in the background:

Digital Volcano's fake progress dialog in action!

Now that the boss has gone away,  you can ponder some computer acronyms

Or visit Technical Standards and look at their 2001 through 2005 winners of the Worst Manual Contest Too true to be funny, perhaps? How about the packaging for an iron: “Do not iron clothes on body” (and others far worse than that).

Well, that just scratched the surface, but did I manage to tickle your funnybone, at least a tiny bit?

Your own witty contributions, drolleries, jests, flippancies, gags and hilarities are most welcome in the iTWire comments section!

Have some fun with a challenge or two that I've devised for you!
