Communications Compliance - the new independent body set up by the telecoms industry to monitor service providers' compliance to the new Telecommunications Consumer Protection (TCP) code - has named Victoria Rubensohn AM as its consumer representative board member.

Communications Compliance's constitution requires it to have an independent chair, one board member to be the chair of Communications Alliance (Michael Lee) and one to be a consumer representative. Deirdre Mason, a former director of corporate affairs at Telstra, was named chair last month.

Mason said: "[Rubensohn's] background and experience will be invaluable, particularly during the establishment of the new company. The fact that Ms Rubensohn's nomination was supported by the Australian Consumer Communications Action Network (ACCAN) indicates that Communications Compliance Ltd will develop as a robust partnership between consumers and industry to the benefit of all."

Rubensohn is presently the convenor of the Classification Review Board and principal at Omni Media, an international communications consultancy.

She has chaired government committees on copyright convergence and digital broadcasting, chaired the National Film and Sound Archive and the Telephone Information Services Standards Council, has been a director Media Access Australia and Communications Law Centre, a member of Standing Advisory Consumer Consultative Committee for ACCAN and was a member of the Mobile Premium Services review panel.

She is a former president of the Communications and Media Law Association and was the founding director and secretary of The Fred Hollows Foundation. She was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2004 "For service to the media and to telecommunications, particularly through the National Screen and Sound Archive Council and the Copyright Convergence Group."
