ACCC renames & expands telecoms regulatory arm

IT Policy - Regulation

The ACCC has announced details of a new structure for the group responsible for telecommunications regulation.
The group changed its name in March from Telecommunications to Communications to "reflect the broader advisory role performed by the group in relation to communications markets beyond those telecommunications markets caught by the specific provisions within the Trade Practices Act and [to] recognise the emergence of new technologies, which compete with, and complement, traditional communications services." The group remains within the Regulatory Affairs Division of the ACCC.

The former general manager, telecommunications, Michael Cosgrave, remains as general manager of the renamed group which consists of the Compliance and Regulatory Operations Branch, managed by Robert Wright, and the Strategic Analysis and Development Branch, managed by Richard Home.

The group has also acquired some solid telecommunications technical expertise with the appointment of former Telstra and Siemens executive, Jim Park, as technical advisor. He reports to the director of the regulatory policy and coordination unit, within the Strategic Analysis and Policy branch.

Staff in the Group are distributed between Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. The ACCC said it would provide details of the roles of the two divisions and an organisational chart on its website but they were not available at the time of writing.
