OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
Australia’s other several hundred pound telco gorilla, Optus, has issued a statement responding to the victory of Australia’s Labor party in winning government and commenting on regulation and the National Broadband Network.
Optus has responded to today’s victory of the Australia Labor Party in winning government in Australia and in particular making comments on regulation and the NBN (national broadband network).
Maha Krishnapillai, the Director of Government and Corporate Affairs at Optus made all of the comments below:
“Optus welcomes the decision by the two Independents to support a minority Labor Government under the leadership of Julia Gillard.
“As acknowledged by both MPs broadband is crucial to Australia’s future prosperity and fibre is indisputably the best way to deliver high speed broadband for the long-term.
“As Tony Windsor said and we agree: “You build it once. You build it right. You build it with fibre.”
“While today is an endorsement of the long-term NBN solution, it is also an endorsement of the need for long overdue regulatory reform to improve competition and choice, particularly for those in regional Australia.
‘Experience over the last decade has taught us that the current regulatory structure is broken. As we build towards an NBN future, immediate regulatory reform is essential. We believe that the telco reform bill – including the structural separation of Telstra and greater power for the ACCC to enforce a level playing field in the fixed line market – must be a priority for the new Government.
“It is testament to the increasing importance of broadband in how we live, work and play that it became a defining issue of this election. It is also testament to the frustration people have felt with the current market structure and the failure of the regulatory regime to improve competition and choice, particularly for those in regional Australia.
“We welcome the Government’s commitment to building the NBN in regional Australia first.
“We hope that we can now move beyond the broadband debate and get on with the job of building a world class broadband network – a network which will bridge the divide between regional and metropolitan Australia and ensure that Australia remains one of the world’s leading economies for many years to come.”
