Retail providers sign on for NBN Tassie

IT Policy - Regulation

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has cut the ribbon on an NBN Tasmania Test Centre in Hobart, with second-tier ISP's Primus, Internode and iiNet confirming they will start offering services through the network from July.

The proof-of-concept Test Centre is the live site where retail providers will test services - most notably the ability for the National Broadband Network to interconnect with the existing Telstra network infrastructure.

Telstra has not signed on as a retail service provider at this stage, a spokewoman for NBN Tasmania told iTWire.

Senator Conroy said the test centre would be used by retail providers to refine services that could ultimately roll-out across the broader NBN nationwide.

"Strong interest (from service providers) means more competition, more choice, better and more innovative services for Tasmanians," he said.

While the centre would be used for early testing of services for the network, and in particular its Tasmania roll-out, the NBN company is building a larger integration centre in Melbourne alongside its Network Operations Centre to support the wider roll-out.

NBN Tasmania chairman Doug Campbell said the company is expecting other retail providers to sign up.
