Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Communications minister, senator Helen Coonan, has released a discussion paper outlining proposals to improve Indigenous telecommunications services as part of the Australian Government's 'Backing Indigenous Ability' program.
The total funding for Backing Australia's Ability is $90 million: $36.6 million will be spent on communications and the remainder on broadcasting services.
Coonan said the amount allocated was "almost four times the amount of funding allocated to the previous Telecommunications Action Plan for Remote Indigenous Communities."
The discussion paper "identifies and seeks comment on issues such as access, affordability, awareness, appropriateness and sustainability in providing a range of telecommunications services to indigenous communities and how best they might be achieved."
The government is seeking submissions from indigenous communities, the telecommunications industry, other interested stakeholders and members of the public on the design and implementation of the program. Submissions are due by COB on 12 May 2006.The discussion paper is available from the DCITA website, here.
