New promoter for National Relay Service

IT Policy - Regulation

The Government has snubbed incumbent, The Australian Communications Exchange, and appointed WestWood Spice - a Sydney-based specialist consulting group with expertise in the community and human services sectors - to raise awareness of National Relay Service, that provides real-time transcription of telephone conversations for the hearing impaired.

Since its inception the actual relay service has been provided by the Australian Communication Exchange which has to date also provided the outreach service since its inception. ACE's contract for the provision of the relay service is also up for renewal and is yet to be finalised.

WestWood Spice will partner with the Australian Federation of Deaf Societies Inc, a not-for-profit organisation, to operate across Australia.

Announcing the decision, communications minister, senator Helen Coonan, said: "The outreach service is designed to increase awareness and acceptance of the relay service, offer information, and provide support and training to users and potential users."
