The Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) has set up
Convergence Group to advise on the best way to tackle issues relating
to VoIP, next generation networks (NGN), content and other associated
areas. The group's emphasis will be on "developing outcomes tailored to
the specific issues" but it will not be responsible for implementing
the recommended solutions, which ACIF says "could involve the
production of fact sheets, holding of forums, development of codes or
standards etc."
ACIF's aim is to forestall the imposition of regulation on future
technologies and services by developing self-regulatory solutions
backed by the collaboration and commitment of all sectors of the
industry. "The ACIF Convergence Group will offer the opportunity for a
broad cross-section of interested parties to sit down together and come
up with some practical solutions without the need for government
intervention," said ACIF CEO, Anne Hurley, who will chair the group.
