Praise for NBN from an unexpected quarter

IT Policy - Government Tech Policy

A private sector executive in the home of free enterprise has backed the Federal Government's decision to put public money into the creation of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Edward Lux, vice president technology of US-based online chemical supplier chempoint.com, has praised Australia's NBN plan.

Lux said the NBN was a good way of moving the country ahead, and was comparable to the US Government's investment in highways during the 1950s.

It will provide an opportunity for Australia to become a world leader by making it possible to get great communications facilities outside major cities, he said.

Lux noted that the US was prepared to spend $US20 billion on a high-speed rail link between Tampa and Orlando (Florida), but only $US7 billion on broadband.

"I'm thrilled to see a country take that step," he said.
