Obama’s tech man drives cloud apps for govt

IT Policy - Government Tech Policy

The Obama administration has unveiled a long-term strategic shift in government IT thinking, launching an online storefront of cloud-based tech services for Federal agencies as part of the country’s drive to reduce cost and improve collaboration.

US chief information officer Vivek Kundra has launched the Apps.gov site to enable faster roll-out of new applications and services, and to reduce the complexity inherent in large-scale departmental IT departments.

"By consolidating available services, Apps.gov is a one-stop source for cloud services – an innovation that not only can change how IT operates, but also save taxpayer dollars in the process," Kundra wrote on the Whitehouse blog.

The US Government spends more than US$75 billion annually on information technology.

Kundra said Apps.gov was an storefront for federal agencies to quickly browse and purchase cloud-based services, for productivity, collaboration, and efficiency.

The US standards institute defines 'Cloud' as a computing model where IT is delivered as a service over the internet to many users – and where those users consume only what they need and only pay for what they actually use.

"With more rapid access to innovative IT solutions, agencies can spend less time and taxpayer dollars on procedural items and focus more on using technology to achieve their missions," Kundra says.

We are just beginning this undertaking, and it will take time before we can realize the full potential of cloud computing.

Like the US' recently announced Data.gov initiative, Kundra said Apps.gov will start small with the goal of rapidly scaling it up in size.

"Along the way, we will need to address various issues related to security, privacy, information management and procurement to expand our cloud computing services," Kundra said.
