Victorians open KL office to spruik tech sector

IT Policy - Government Tech Policy

Victorian trade authorities have identified Malaysia and Singapore as key export markets for the technology sector in the coming decade.

The Victorian Government’s southeast Asia trade commissioner Tim Dillon said new opportunities would emerge for the Australian tech companies in both countries as they prepared to invest heavily in industry development initiatives.

Dillon will head a new Victorian Government trade office in Kuala Lumpur to be opened next month.

Australia’s signing of the free trade agreement with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would almost certainly boost trade in the region, Dillon said.

With the food and beverage industry, Victoria has singled out ICT as the sector with the best new opportunities in the Singapore and Malaysian markets.

In its export development strategies paper, the Victorian government says both countries had good communications and technology infrastructure and a strong, qualified labour force to service these areas.

Dillon says in Malaysia there were especially good opportunities in eHealth, eLearning, eSecurity and eGovernment, as well as in creative multimedia – including games development – as well as telecommunications services.

In Singapore, the recognised ICT hub for ASEAN, good opportunities existed in eGovernment and eHealth, as well as web applications and eCommerce.

"In terms of economic growth and trade, South East Asia is on the move and we need to be part of this," Dillon said. "Some Victorian businesses are already capitalising on this growth, but we want to see many more businesses taking advantage of … export opportunities on our doorstep."
