The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Data centre capacity constraints are so severe at Centrelink that the agency cannot wait for the Gershon-inspired consolidation strategy to emerge, instead signing a $5 million short-term relocation and expansion plan.
Centrelink awarded the two-year, $4.9 million contract with Canberra
Data Centres for the lease of its Hume facility, to commence on
September 1.
It is understood Centrelink moved ahead with its interim data centre
plans because floor space shortages had become so critical the issue presented a growing risk to its overall operations.
Commonwealth data centre operations formed a core component of the
review of government ICT conducted by Sir Peter Gershon on
behalf of Lindsay Tanner’s Finance department.
The Gershon review found huge potential savings for Government if it
pursued a whole-of-Government data centre consolidation strategy.
Gershon found consolidated data centres could deliver more
than $1 billion in savings over the next 15 years.
Finance’s Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO)
has been conducting a top to bottom review of Government data centre
needs with 12 key agencies, and has been mapping a strategy for
consolidating data centre use.
Although AGIMO is expected to release a long-term strategy on data centre consolidation next month, Centrelink could not wait.
An Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) report on “Business
Continuity Management and Emergency Management in Centrelink” tabled in
June found data centre constraints at the agency increased the risk to
the agency of business continuity problems.
Canberra Data Centres says its onsite generator farm and ‘live’ tanker
refuelling station means its’ Hume data centre site can run
indefinitely in ‘island’ mode, independent from mains power supply from
the single power grid in the ACT.
