Aust Govt pumps $270m into rural broadband

IT Policy - Government Tech Policy

The program changes include up-front payments for large infrastructure deployments, greater flexibility in subsidy levels, improved consumer protections and a higher level of broadband service.

Classed as a “safety net” for rural and regional Australians unable to access metro-comparable broadband services, the measure is a stop gap that will enable those in affected areas the ability to access broadband at reasonable pricing.

It’s all happening because the Australian Federal Government’s plan to implement a fibre to the node (FTTN) network across Australia is still in the early planning stages and will likely take five years to build.

The new program starts on Monday the 4th August 2008, so if you’re in a rural or regional zone or know people that could benefit, and want to take advantage of the program, you can visit the website of the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy or freecall 1800 883 488 weekdays between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm (AEST).
