You could be forgiven for thinking that a press release headed: "Gillard Government provides $15.2 million for NBN local training services," represents the announcement of yet another bucket of government money being poured in to encouraging uptake of the NBN, but in fact its is merely announcing the recipients of previously announced funding.

When it released its Digital Economy Strategy in June 2011 the Government announced two funding programs: Digital Communities and Digital Enterprises.

The Digital Communities program promised $13.6m over three years to establish 'Digital Hubs', initially in the NBN first release sites, where online training would be provided to local residents to allow them to experience what the NBN would allow them to do.

The Digital Enterprise program allocated $10.0m over three years, to assist small and medium business and not for profit organisations to better understand how to take advantage of online opportunities created by the NBN.

The $15.2m announced today is the funding to successful applications in round two and round three of the Digital Enterprise program and, probably - it is not at all clear - round two and round three of the Digital Communities program.

The full list of all projects funded to date is in the government's press release.
