Former ACIF chair, Neville Stevens to chair Comms Alliance

The former chairman of the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF), Neville Stevens, has been elected to chair the Communications Alliance, formed on 1 September by the merger of ACIF and the Service Providers Industry Assocation (SPAN).

Since then he he has been chairman of the transitional Communications Alliance board with former SPAN executive chairman John Kranenburg.

Stevens is a former senior public servant with a 20 year involvement in industry, telecommunications, broadcasting and information economy issues from both a domestic and international perspective. His roles have include five years as deputy secretary, Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce, three years as secretary, Department of Industry, Technology and Regional Development and eight years as secretary, Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.

He resigned from the public service in April 2001 and is currently chairman of the Australian Centre for Advanced Computing and Communications (Ac3), and National ICT Australia (NICTA) and a member of the advisory board for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Complex Systems.

The Communications Alliance gives its prime mission as being "to promote the growth of the Australian communications industry and the protection of consumer interests by fostering the highest standards of business ethics and behaviour through industry self-governance.
