Apple has announced changes to its executive team that appear to raise the status of the Mac division.

Apple has promoted two of its vice presidents to senior vice presidents, and announced that another executive won't be leaving after all.

Craig Federighi, previously vice president of Mac software engineering, is now senior vice president of Mac software engineering.

He will continue to be responsible for the development of OS X and for the company's common operating system engineering teams.

The promotion is likely to be a shot in the arm for the OS X side of the business, as unlike iOS, iTunes and the Apple Stores, it previously lacked direct representation on Apple's executive management team.

Mr Federighi's career included stints at NeXT, Apple, and Ariba before returning to Apple in 2009 to lead Mac OS X engineering.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
