The CEO of Australia's second largest DSL broadband provider, iiNet, Michael Malone, who started his business in his parents garage, has been named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
Malone was given his award for his 'vision, leadership and business achievements' with iiNet, which he said he had begun in his parents' garage 'with the sole purpose of connecting myself to the Internet.'

The Ernst & Young awards, now in their 11th year, recognise and celebrate the significant contribution entrepreneurs make to business communities.

Malone said receiving the award was a great privilege and presented an opportunity to reflect on how far the business had come. 'Now my staff connect and support more than 1.3 million services across the country.'

'Having just celebrated 18 years and as the second largest DSL broadband provider in Australia, iiNet has certainly come a long way. I'm extremely proud of where we are today and the direction we're heading in.

Malone will represent Australia at the World Entrepreneur of the Year awards in Monte Carlo next year.
