Assange extradition decision tonight

IT People - People

The enigmatic founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange will find out around 8:45pm (Australian time) whether he will extradited from Britain to answer questions related to sexual assault allegations in Sweden.

The High Court in London is due to announce its decision on the Julian Assange extradition at 8.45pm (09.45 GMT) following his arrest last December and a lengthy appeals process.

A lower court in Britain had previously ordered Assange be sent to Sweden to answer the allegations last February, but the decision was appealed in the High Court.  Sources observe that although Assange may appeal to the Supreme Court should he lose, there is no avenue of appeal to the Home Office for direct intervention.

Mr Assange, who founded the whistle-blower web site Wikileaks, has consistently denied the allegations and has consistently claimed that the charges are politically motivated. He has been living under strict bail conditions during the appeals process, which included having to wear an electronic ankle bracelet.

During the appeal process, Assange has based himself (with the agreement of the courts) at the country estate of Frontline Club owner, Vaughan Smith but is expected to be in court for the judgement.

iTWire will announce the decision as soon as it is available.
