New head for European telecoms standards body

The 47th general assembly of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)  has elected a new director general to replace Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, who has held the post for the past 15 years.

The new appointee, Dr Walter Weigel will take up the position on 1 July 2006 for a five year term. He is currently vice president standardisation & regulation with Siemens Corporate Technology.

Rosenbrock lead ETSI during  a period when it played a key role in the development of many of today's most important standards: GSM, 3G, wireline and wireless broadband, digital television, integrated services and digital networks.
