Apple board member Jerry York has died.

Jerry York, a former chief financial officer at IBM and Chrysler, and a member of Apple's board of directors, has died at the age of 71.

"Jerry joined Apple's Board in 1997 when most doubted the company's future. He has been a pillar of financial and business expertise and insight on our Board for over a dozen years," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

"It's been a privilege to know and work with Jerry, and I'm going to miss him a lot," added Jobs.

York was re-elected to the Apple board on February 26, 2010.

York was credited as being instrumental in the improvements to the financial health of Chrysler and IBM during his tenure at those companies. On leaving IBM, he joined investment company Tracinda and subsequently joined the GM board.
