The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
"Garry brings a great deal of senior level experience from within the industry and we feel very strongly that he is the right person to drive Synergy Plus to the next level as an organisation," said chairman Domenic Martin.
Henley has been working as a consultant since leaving Alphawest in 2008. He was one of the founders of Alphawest, was appointed managing director in 1999, and CEO in 2002. He remained with the company as it went through an acquisition by Solution 6, a management buyout, and an acquisition by SingTel Optus.
The appointment frees Cappendell to take up his intended tole as chief operating officer. He said "it is a good time to pass the baton to Garry who has excellent credentials in growing profitable businesses."
Martin paid tribute to Cappendell's efforts as acting CEO: "We are pleased that Peter will be continuing with the company in a new role as chief operating officer and we thank him for his outstanding contribution as acting CEO over the past six months."
