National broadband company, Internode, has recruited technology entrepreneur Frank Falco to the role of chief information officer (CIO), after he spent 18 months on the board of the growing South Australian-based ISP.

Internode CEO, Patrick Tapper said today that Falco “added a lot of value to the company,” which he said was “constantly working on how to maintain the energy and enthusiasm of a start-up company despite becoming a much larger enterprise.”

“Frank’s insight into technology and hands-on understanding of running rapidly growing businesses qualify him uniquely for the CIO role and will help to keep Internode innovating like a young company.”

Falco joins Internode from the Internet technology sector. He was previously general manager of business development at financial software specialist Finantix in Sydney, operations manager at search engine optimisation firm, YourAmigo, and founding CEO of online application development company, Recall Design, which accounting software firm MYOB bought a majority stake in.

Tapper said that as Internode’s CIO, Falco’s role involves planning the evolution and coordinating the integration of Internode’s core technology to support its fast-growing business. According to Tapper, since 2005, Internode has grown from less than 100 employees to more than 450, and in 2009 the company had more than 180,000 broadband customers, from individuals to large corporations, throughout Australia.

Falco said he accepted the role to experience the “exciting opportunities” at Internode.  “We’ve come through a long period of strong growth, so we now have the opportunity to take our systems, customer support and technology to the next level.

“We do a good job now, despite some legacy systems from the fast-growth phase, so my role is to build and refine that solid infrastructure base to deliver both better customer service and introduce innovative new services. As the industry matures, delivering value-added services is central to Internode’s success. We are a technology-driven company rather than a company supported by technology.”

According to Falco, “broadband has gone from being just a service to a platform that delivers a range of services such as Voice over IP, private IP networks and IPTV, and he says that “enhanced telephony services present a big opportunity, both for our residential and business customers.”
