Tons of cash for IT workers yet job vacancies abound

Peoplebank’s Leon Lau says those jobs that cannot be filled by local or overseas talent are typically being turned into contract roles, taking longer to fill or are being filled with people who are underqualified.

“It has caused a bit of a problem. We have full employment in IT,” says Lau meaning there is no unemployment in the sector.

“(Workers) can move from employer to employer and typically for a better salary. If they are not satisfied with the current environment or want more pay, they quickly move.”

Either way it is good news for new candidates, says Barnett: “The market is buoyant. It’s a good time to be looking for permanent work”.

Hays Recruitment will release the results of their own annual salary survey next week.
