IT&T jobs growth stagnates over past year: report

IT People - Enterprise

A new employment survey has found that IT and Telecoms jobs growth has slowed considerably over the past 12 months and has fallen far behind the growth average of all major industries. The finding is a worrying sign that the IT&T jobs market could be turning down after 3 years of robust growth. Or is it?

According to the March 2008 Olivier Job Index, an Internet jobs board survey conducted monthly by recruitment firm Olivier Group, jobs growth in the IT&T sector fell 0.91% in March and recorded a modest 11.24% growth over 12 months.

Average growth over 12 months across all industries has been 32.38% compared to 50% in the previous year.

Olivier Group singled out IT&T as a sector experiencing problems in the recruitment area saying that “it isn’t faring too well.”

“Further delays in the federal government's broadband scheme won't help the hardware suppliers either,” the recruiter notes.

“The key software development sector is down 6.5%, perhaps because of cut backs from banks and government”, Director of the Olivier Group, Robert Olivier says. “And that has a flow on effect.”

A question that has arisen, however, is whether the Olivier findings will be in step with the findings of other recruiters who conduct similar jobs surveys covering the IT&T sector.

Olivier Group also reported a drop in IT&T jobs of 7.11% in February. However, its dour findings were at odds with surveys from other recruiters.
