Deloitte will merge its online consulting division and digital group under the banner of Deloitte Digital from the second week in May. It's a move which the professional services firm says positions it to challenge both the major systems integrators and digital media agencies to develop and deploy online, social, mobile and content solutions for clients.

Mark White, the chief technology officer for Deloitte Consulting, who is currently in Australia said the plan, which is modelled on the direction that Deloitte set in Australia, will allow it to develop solutions for clients embracing mobile technology, social and web platforms and content. In January this year the company bought Ubermind, a US based mobile agency which boosts its capability in that area, and which will now be leveraged internationally.

Frank Farrall, the leader of Deloitte's online business in Australia will lead the Deloitte Digital group when that sets up in May.  Mr Farrall said that would 'unleash' Peter Williams, who pioneered Deloitte Digital in Australia and is the unit's current CEO, to focus on strategic analysis about the future technology horizons which Deloitte and its clients would face 18 months to two years hence.

Mr Williams has not yet responded to calls from iTWire to clarify his future role.

The combination of the two practice groups into a single unit will lead to Deloitte Digital having a team of 200 people at its disposal in Australia. In the US the addition of Ubermind means Deloitte Digital (US) will have a team of 400.

Mr Farrall said that user demand for its services was rising strongly and that the online and digital groups had enjoyed double digit revenue growth last year and were the fastest growing business units in Deloitte Consulting. Mr White said 'we are copying shamelessly' the Australian approach to providing online consulting and digital services to clients.

The company claims that this will position Deloitte Digital to compete against the big four professional services firms, large systems integrators as well as digital agencies thanks to its combined understanding of technology, the online, social and mobile markets, along with its experience working with and on businesses.
