IT Industry - Strategy

Another set of patent infringement suits have been filed against major tech companies.

Texas-based technology company PersonalWeb claims to have patented technology "that is fundamental for many important elements of cloud computing technology, distributed search engine file systems, social media and content addressable storage."

The company has revealed that it has filed patent infringement suits against several large or well-known IT companies. The defendants are Google, YouTube, Amazon, EMC, VMware, Dropbox, NetApps, NEC and Caringo.

"PersonalWeb protects its proprietary business applications and operations through a portfolio of patents that it owns, and we are actively pursuing licensing and participation in the operation of businesses that use these patents," said Michael Weiss, PersonalWeb's president and CEO.

The company uses its patented technology in products including the StudyPods social learning platform and the Global File Registry digital content management system.
