iPod sales make Apple profits sing an iTune

Apple Computer is now the darling of Wall Street due mainly to stratospheric sales of its iPod music player in its third quarter, with Macintosh computers playing a strong supporting role.

During Q3, Apple sold a phenonemal 8.1 million iPods, a 32% increase on the number sold in the previous corresponding quarter. Meanwhile Mac sales increased 12% to 1.3 million.

Together the two flagship Apple devices contributed the lion's share of the company's Q3 earnings and revenues, which rose an impressive 48% and 24%, to US$472 million and US$4.37 billion, respectively.

According to Apple CEO, Steven Jobs, the iPod continues to have more than 75% US market share.

Jobs didn't however mention how things are going in Europe where the company is having a bit of trouble with regulators trying bust up the iPod and iTunes marriage made in heaven.
