Vodafone beefs up 3G network backbone

IT Industry - Strategy

Vodafone is promising its customers improved network performance as a result of an upgrade to its 3G network.

Last month, Vodafone Hutchinson Australia (VHA) announced a major expansion of its 3G network alongside the shutdown of the network shared by Hutchison (3) and Telstra.

The company today announced the rollout of increased transmission capacity across its network over the next two years. According to company officials, this will improve "network performance and customer experience by bringing significant bandwidth to support high data use at a lower cost."

They noted that the new capacity is "complementary to the NBN".

VHA is also planning a new 850MHz network, 1400 new 3G sites, and trials of technologies including femtocells (very small base stations intended to serve individual premises) and LTE.

At least part of the increased transmission capacity will be provided by Nextgen Networks.
