A special two day event starting today is aiming to boost the number of young Victorian females entering a career in Victoria's ICT industry.

 

Launching the Go Girl Go for IT initiative at Deakin University today, Minister for Women's Affairs Maxine Morand said the event was aimed at making girls aware of the many career opportunities available in ICT.

'Since 2005, ICT employment in Victoria has grown by 4 per cent but despite this, women make up less than 20 per cent of the ICT workforce - a trend our Government is working hard to change,' Ms Morand said.

'Through this initiative more than 2000 girls from years nine to 11 will gather at Deakin University's Burwood campus to hear from women who have exciting careers in ICT and learn how ICT can lead to careers in industries as diverse as film, advertising, medicine and science.

'This event provides a fantastic opportunity for girls to speak with industry leaders and learn more about the ICT sector.

'It will provide girls with information about the diversity of ICT roles and how they exist in fun and fulfilling areas, such as in fashion, film and pharmaceuticals.'

The Go Girl Go for IT event is run by the Victorian Women in ICT Network, and supported by the Brumby Labor Government.

It complements the ICT: Start Here. Go Anywhere careers awareness campaign and the Brumby Labor Government's $1.85 million skills package aimed at changing youth perceptions of ICT courses and careers.

Minister for ICT John Lenders said there is simply no better time for people to consider an ICT career in Victoria than right now.

'Securing the National Broadband Network's National Operations Centre in Melbourne means Victoria is set for a prosperous future in ICT,' Mr Lenders said.

'Victoria is now the nation's ICT capital and young Victorians looking for a rewarding career should consider the many options within our exciting ICT industry.'
