NBN extends free connection deadline

IT Industry - Strategy

A week after learning it had won a reprieve thanks to the formation of a Gillard Government, NBN Co has extended the deadline for individuals and organisations based in First Release locations to sign up for free connection to the broadband network.

In a released issued today NBN Ceo Mike Quigley said that there were a large number of properties which had yet to return consent forms.

'I recognise that some people may have been holding back given the uncertainty that surrounded the election, so we have now provided an extra window of opportunity,' Mr Quigley said.

The original cutoff date for applications for a free standard connection in some of the First Release sites was August 31st. This has now been extended to 8 October for residents and businesses in Townsville, Willunga, Kiama and Armidale.

'We don't want anyone in the First Release Sites to miss out on becoming one of the first properties in Australia to become NBN ready,' he said.

His enthusiasm for connection is not shared by the Opposition which reiterated its objection to the national broadband network today. Dubbing the NBN a likely 'icon of waste' the Opposition leader Tony Abbott has installed Malcolm Turnbull as shadow communications minister.
