CSC to build cloud computing on Cisco, EMC & VMware's Vblock

IT Industry - Strategy

CSC is to embrace Vblock - the server, storage and networking 'packages' produced by Cisco, EMC and VMware - as the preferred technology stack for cloud offerings "to help customers more easily and securely migrate their business processes to the cloud."

Vblock infrastructure packages are an element of the Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition formed by Cisco, EMC and VMware last November. They consist of integrated, tested and validated data centre infrastructure offerings that combine virtualisation software from VMware; networking, security and computing from Cisco; and storage, security and management technologies from EMC.

They support a broad range of operating systems and applications and are designed to enable customers to rapidly migrate existing applications to a virtualised environment.

CSC says it will expand its alliance with the VCE coalition "to develop a new global solutions unit and create centres of excellence based on VCE's Vblock infrastructure," and that it and the VCE coalition "have committed new resources in engineering, sales and support for customers to test VCE-enabled offerings through CSC's specialised centres of excellence in Chantilly, Virginia, Aldershot, England and Sydney, Australia within the next 90 days."

Using Vblocks, CSC now claims to "provide a fully-integrated, seamless and secure transition to the cloud that combines…transformational consulting, service oriented architecture (SOA), applications modernisation and refactoring and trusted cloud managed services."

CSC's Trusted Cloud Managed Services will use Vblock as the basis of its infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and future software as a service (SaaS) offerings.

In June, CSC unveiled seven cloud-enabled data centres and new trusted cloud services – including CloudLab and CloudExchange – built to operate on Vblock infrastructure. It says this latest announcement "takes the commitment to the VCE coalition one step further to make Vblock the lead technology stack for CSC's private cloud offerings and to deliver dedicated support and services through a new global solutions unit."
