US still the biggest source of spam

Beijing had more spam zombies (bot-infected computers) than any other city in the world during April and accounted for 10 percent of bot-infected computers in the Asia Pac region, according to the latest Symantec survey. Chinese cities held the top three spots for bot-infected computers. Guangdong was second with  six percent of the region’s bot-infected and Zhejiang third, with five percent.

According to Internet security company, Panda Software, zombie computers - those infected with bots that allow them to be controlled remotely - are now the biggest source of spam on the Internet.

During  April, according to Symantec, the most common spam detected worldwide (22 percent) was related to commercial products such as printer supplies, jewelry, and other consumer goods. Messages touting financial offers such as loans, mortgages, and stock tips accounted for 20 percent of  worldwide spam and spam related to health products or services accounted for 13 percent.  Fraud messages accounted for 11 percent and scams 10 percent.
