Microsoft settles patent case against Salesforce.com

The patent dispute between Microsoft and cloud CRM posterchild Salesforce.com has been settled, but as usual the parties are not saying how much moolah it took to stop the litigation running to judgement.


Back in May, Microsoft sued Salesforce.com, alleging infringement of nine patents.

Salesfoce.com CEO Marc Benioff initially responded by describing Microsoft as "patent trolls" and "alley thugs", with a more formal reaction occurring in June when the company countersued, alleging five of its patents were infringed by various Microsoft products and services including Windows 7 and SharePoint.

The issue has now been settled with a cross-licensing agreement plus unspecified 'compensation' by Salesforce.com.

At the time the first suit was filed, some commentators suggested that the action was one of Microsoft's periodic moves to demonstrate that it is prepared to go to court to protect its patents.

The company has had an active licensing program for its patents and other intellectual property since late 2003.
