Alcatel-Lucent has taken another major step in its strategy to help its major customers - telcos - add value by incorporating content and applications from third parties into their networks: it has acquired ProgrammableWeb, billed as "the universal source for Web application programming interfaces."
According to Alcatel-Lucent, ProgrammableWeb's API's are used by application developers to build web, mobile, and other connected applications that serve consumers and the workplace. "They enable developers to create new applications leveraging various kinds of content and functionality."
Alcatel-Lucent says the acquisition "will help bring together an ecosystem of service providers, enterprises, and developers to drive the creation of unique applications today and in the new world of broadband mobile through LTE'¦For Alcatel-Lucent this acquisition provides an important new channel to partner with the Web developer community."
It added: "This move advances Alcatel-Lucent's Application Enablement strategy, which is focused on combining the trusted and secure network capabilities of service providers with the speed and creativity of the Web to provide a richer end-user experience."
The acquisition is the third initiative in a journey the company started in December 2009 when it announced its 'Open API Service' and 'Application Exposure Suite'.
