Mobile industry to train staff to cut networks' energy use

IT Industry - Strategy

Australia's three mobile carriers, through the Mobile Carriers Forum, have launched an online training programme for industry employees in bid to reduce the carbon footprint and electricity costs of mobile networks, which typically account for 93 percent of operators' energy consumption.

The 'online energy efficiency training programme and best practice guide' is an initiative of the Mobile Carriers Forum (MCF), a division of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA), in partnership with national climate change consultancy Energetics and the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW (DECCW).

It has received $96,000 funding through NSW Government's Energy Efficiency Training Programme and is supported by MCF member network carriers Optus, Telstra and Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) who will contribute to the content of the training modules and the best practice guide.

The training will be directed to those with key roles in the rollout and operation of mobile networks including project managers, design engineers and life cycle managers to increase their awareness and knowledge of energy use.

MCF hopes it will support "a cultural and systemic shift, focused on changing work practices and behaviour for technical staff in the area of radio access networks."
