Nokia and Yahoo! join forces for maps email and chat offerings

Faced with ever increasing competition from the likes of Apple, and the Google backed Android platform, Nokia and Yahoo! have formed a global alliance that will see Nokia become the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services and Yahoo! the exclusive, global provider of Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services

The two companies also plan to work on identity federation between their services, initially to enable people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo! properties.

According to Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvum the alliance is all about "Delivering great user experiences - both online and on your mobile'¦We're enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings.

"Similarly, Yahoo!'s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile."

The two companies say they will use their respective global distribution advantages and brand recognition across consumer audiences. The first co-branded service offerings are expected to become available from the second half of 2010, followed by global availability in 2011.

Ovi Maps accessed via Yahoo! properties will be branded as "powered by Ovi" and Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services delivered by Yahoo! will be branded as "Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!"
