VMware and Google putting a Spring into cloud portability

IT Industry - Strategy

VMware and Google are collaborating to allow the deployment of Spring Java applications on the Google App Engine. This move stands to benefit developers and their customers alike.

VMware and Google have begun work on collaborative projects intended to enable Java developers to build rich web applications, use Google and VMware performance tools on cloud apps, and deploy of Spring Java applications on Google App Engine.

"Companies are actively looking to move toward cloud computing. They are certainly attracted by the economic advantages associated with cloud, but increasingly are focused on the business agility and innovation promised by cloud computing," said Paul Maritz, president and CEO of VMware.

"VMware and Google... will work to ensure that modern applications can run smoothly within the firewalls of a company's datacentre or out in the public cloud environment," he added.

This is an important point, as various organisations are looking to use a combination of on-premises software to meet base loads, and then tapping external cloud infrastructure to cope with the peaks.

The collaboration is also significant for application developers, who stand to benefit from a potentially wider market with little or no changes to their code.

And other benefits for developers are expected to accrue from the partnership - see page 2.
