OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
The Vodafone Group is to be restructured into two, largely, regional-focussed units and one focussing on new business and innovation.
The company claims the new structure will bring operational benefits and cost reductions from local and regional scale in more mature markets, drive profitable growth from emerging markets and "position the company to capture new revenue streams by extending its reach into converged and IP services".
Group CEO, Arun Sarin, said that the creation of three new business units and an increased focus on costs, reflected the fact that "different approaches that will be required to continue to succeed, both in terms of our existing operations and in capturing new revenue streams for the future".
There will be a European unit headed by Bill Morrow, currently president of Vodafone's business in Japan. It will contain all Vodafone's principal European subsidiaries including Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK and will focus on "leveraging its unique regional scale and reducing costs".
The unit will also include the global technology and marketing functions. Tim Miles, currently CEO of Vodafone UK will become the CTO. His old role will be taken by Nick Read, currently chief commercial officer in Vodafone UK.
The second "geographic" unit will be responsible for Vodafone's operations in Central Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and for its affiliates. The CEO of this unit will be Paul Donovan, currently CEO of OVS (Other Vodafone Subsidiaries). It will contain, and will have a particular focus on profitable growth of, Vodafone's emerging markets businesses. These emerging markets will be grouped into three clusters "to maximise the benefits of regional focus".
This unit will also include Vodafone's joint ventures, affiliates and investments: Verizon Wireless, China Mobile, Vodacom and SFR.
The New Businesses and Innovation unit will be lead by Thomas Geitner, currently the group's CTO and an executive director. It will focus on converged and IP services in order to deliver new revenue streams as Vodafone seeks to provide innovative services to its customers.
